Registrar Onboarding

Registrar Onboarding is a process that a registrar must complete to obtain Accreditation so that it can provision domain names in the available zones. This may include, inter alia, signing the prescribed or relevant Registrar Agreement, paying an accreditation fee and passing a series of technical (OT&Es) and legal checks. The ZA Registry Consortium (ZARC) has an onboarding process within its registry function.

Once a registrar has been accredited by ZARC and has passed selected OT&Es, it can provision domain names in the zones administered by ZARC, including but not limited to the following:

If you have any questions that are not covered in the Onboarding Process below, please see our Onboarding Frequently Asked Questions.

Onboarding Process

1 - Signup

All applicants are required to activate an online service account with ZARC to obtain access to the Registrar Portal. This is an important first step as it creates the communication and transactional channel in terms of which registrars may engage with the Registry.

2 - Registrar Agreement and Fees

Registrars must agree to the terms and conditions contained in the Registry-Registrar Agreement before they can make use of the registry services. Registrars must click on the link provided in the signup confirmation email, review the latest Registry Registrar Agreement and accept the terms of the Agreement as part of the online Signup Process.

If you already have an account with ZARC then this will not be necessary. Registrars must keep abreast of updates to this Agreement which will be published from time to time on the registry website.

An Accreditation Fee must be paid prior to the review of any new application. This can be performed directly via credit card through the Registrar Portal after logging in, or alternatively by making a wire transfer. Please see our Banking webpage for more information on wire transfers.

3 - ZARC Accreditation

Once a registrar has accepted the Registry Registrar Agreement and paid the associated Accreditation Fee, it must provide the registry with the necessary legal and administrative information required to pass legal verification. This includes submitting current and accurate primary and secondary contact information and legally acceptable company registration documentation. Registrars are required to upload a copy of their company registration document which will be reviewed for accuracy and legality by the ZARC legal team. This process may take up to 5 working days.

If the information and/or documentation provided by an applicant is deficient for any reason, a representative from ZARC will contact the primary contact on the application to remedy the defect, failing which, the accreditation process will be stopped.

Please note that ZARC will accredit the entity described in the legally acceptable company registration document and not its unregistered trading style.

4 - Select Products and Namespaces

Applicants who have passed accreditation will receive an email notification from ZARC. In the Onboarding section within the Registrar Portal, the applicant can then request testing credentials for the OT&E server.

Registrars that have completed the Technical Review step of Onboarding can then request ‘Live Credentials’ from the registry thereby enabling it to provision domain names in the supported zones, namely co.za, web.za, net.za and org.za.

SSL certificates as well as incoming IP addresses (ACL) must be set within the Registrar Portal to successfully connect via EPP.

5 - Terms and Compliance

Registrars that have been given ‘Live Credentials’ are required to familiarise themselves with the registry policies applicable to each of the available zones. All policies are available online and may be accessed by clicking on the “Legal/Polices” menu at the top of the registry website.
